Jose Reyes has headed back to New York for further tests on his thyroid.  The local papers are all over the story; the Post has stories here and here, and the News has a story here.

Of course, there are rumors that thyroid problems are related to HGH use.  Please.  Reyes, Carlos Beltran and Alex Rodriguez have been questioned by the FBI concerning a doctor in Toronto who is known to be fond of prescribing HGH to people for, shall we say, “non-traditional” reasons, but HGH and Graves Disease (=hyperthyroidism) are not related.   WebMD has an overview of Graves Disease that goes into detail about the symptoms and the treatments available.  It is treatable, and Reyes will miss about a month of Spring Training, but he should be fine going forward.  George and Barbara Bush both have Graves Disease, and if Jose Reyes can have as long and productive a life as the Bushes have had, he’ll be lucky.

I am particularly interested in Jose’s story because I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism, meaning that my thyroid is sluggish, whereas Jose’s is too active.  I take a Synthroid pill once a day and it’s been amazing.   The miracle of modern medicine!   Why people want the government to get involved and ruin everything just boggles my mind.  They can’t deliver the mail, but they want to deliver medical care?  I.  Don’t.  Think.  So.
