Last night, I went to see the St Lucie Mets play the Bradenton Marauders in Game 1 of the FSL Southern Division playoffs. I wore a Marauders shirt under a Mets jersey, and I figured I’d be happy no matter who won.
50-60 people from the Mets Booster Club took a 3-hour bus trip on SR70 to Bradenton, so there were a whole lot of Mets fans in attendance. I was very disappointed to see that Marauders fans didn’t seem to be quite as enthusiastic as their blue-and-orange counterparts.
So, how was the game? It was a very good game. The Marauders scored first, and were up by 2-0 with 2 outs in the 6th, which is when the Mets tied it up. They went ahead for good in the 9th and headed home up 1 game to none. Here is the box score, and here is the recap. Game 2 is tonight in St Lucie, and the start has been delayed by rain. Zack Wheeler, whom the Mets received from San Francisco in the Beltran trade, is starting game 2. You can listen to the game from the St Lucie perspective here at the team website, and you can hear it from the Marauders perspective here.
Speaking of the Mets and San Francisco, the Savannah Sand Gnats (Carolina League Mets affiliate) is also in the playoffs. They are leading the Augusta Greenjackets (SF Giants affiliate) 1-0 in the 6th inning in their Game 1.
And, last but not least, Game 1 of the NY Penn League semi-finals between the Brooklyn Cyclones and the Staten Island Yankees has been postponed because of the weather.
OK, so it’s only the low-level affiliates that are in the playoffs, but it does bode well for the future of the franchise.
